The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has rejected the presidential nomination of United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia leader, Charles Chanda.
ECZ cited an un-discharged bankruptcy case and failure to provide the party Secretary General as reasons for the rejection.
ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, said Chanda was not validly nominated in accordance with Article 100 of the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act Number 2 of 2016 and Regulations 11 and 18 of the Electoral Process General Regulations.
The Commission through Zaloumis rejected the nomination of Chanda in Lusaka on Monday during the on-going nomination process at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
“The Commission established that Chanda was an un-discharged bankrupt after receiving advice from the Office of the Official Receiver, in a letter dated April 22, 2026,” she said.
She said the Commission also relied on a court judgment in the matter involving Nathan Sinkala and 109 others versus Mr. Chanda under Cause Number 2022/HP/092.
Zaloumis further cited Section 2 as read together with Section 30 of the Election Process Amendment Act Number 12 of 2016.
She said the provision required an adoption certificate to be signed by both the President and Secretary General of a political party recognised under the Societies Act Chapter 119 of the Laws of Zambia.
“The adoption certificate submitted by UPPZ did not bear the name of the party Secretary General, making the document defective,” Zaloumis stated.
She invoked powers under Article 52 Clause 2 of the Constitution to reject Chanda’s nomination, declaring him ineligible to contest the presidential election.
Chanda, however, dismissed claims by the Commission that he was bankrupt, alleging that the decision was unfair and politically motivated.
“I am not bankrupt, how can someone worth K5 billion be bankrupt? These political “MINGALATO” will not work,” he vowed.
