Police in Lusaka have arrested and formally charged Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader Kasonde Mwenda, 42, for allegedly producing and circulating a deceptive video on social media.
Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said Mwenda had been charged with Transmission of Unsolicited Deceptive Electronic Communications, contrary to Section 19 of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.
Chilabi confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to police, Mwenda on May 1, 2026, posted a video on his Facebook page, “Kasonde Mwenda C,” claiming that President Hakainde Hichilema’s motorcade got lost while heading to an event in Chinsali District.
Chilabi said the claim was false.
“The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon,” he said.
Police said the misleading video had previously circulated in April, accompanied by similar claims attributed to Mwenda.
Chilabi explained that on the day in question, President Hichilema arrived at Chinsali Airstrip at around 11:00 hours before being escorted to the Labour Day venue at the Showgrounds in Kapwepwe area.
He said the presidential convoy later executed a planned U-turn to reposition after the President proceeded to a holding room for a scheduled briefing, describing the maneuver as standard procedure.
“The footage being circulated online captures only this routine repositioning process and does not, in any way, suggest that the convoy got lost,” Chilabi said.
He stressed that VVIP movements in Chinsali were carried out with “precision, planning and discipline,” and urged the public to verify information before circulating it.
“The spread of false or misleading content constitutes an offence under the laws of Zambia,” he warned.
