Former Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Director General, Victor Nyasulu, has described the state of governance at the institution as chaotic, blaming political interference for undermining its effectiveness.
Nyasulu, who was dismissed amid investigations involving 61 containers of medicines stranded at a truck yard in Makeni, said political influence was hampering the agency’s operations.
Speaking on Hot FM Radio’s Hot Seat programme on Tuesday, Nyasulu emphasized the need for improved relations between ZAMMSA management and the Ministry of Health to strengthen governance.
“The state of governance at ZAMMSA is chaotic due to political interference. Now someone will say you are a political appointee – that does not matter, as long as someone is qualified. Political cadre deployment is a government policy. I know that the ANC in South Africa has a system of cadre deployment,” he said.
Nyasulu also raised concerns about the handling of various investigations and reports that led to his dismissal, particularly questioning the status of an audit by the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) on drugs procured from Egypt, and investigations by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
He further sought clarity on the outcome of a police investigation conducted on July 12, 2024, which he said has yet to be made public.
“There is need for transparency and accountability in these investigations. It is very disappointing that some reports seem to be missing or withheld,” Nyasulu said.
He also urged the Ministry of Health to release the audit report conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu previously confirmed had been completed.
