The Zambian government is reportedly exploring opportunities to establish cooperation with Chinese firm Launch Design to set up an Electric Vehicle (EV) Assembly Plant in Zambia.
Zambia’s Ambassador to China, Ivan Zyuulu, confirmed that efforts would be made to ensure that Launch Design finds a local partner in Zambia to facilitate the establishment of the plant, in line with the country’s industrialization and diversification goals outlined in the Eighth National Development Plan.
Zyuulu made the remarks during a tour of automobile companies in Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces aimed at exploring potential cooperation in the electric vehicle manufacturing sector.
He held separate meetings with James Wu, General Manager of Wuxi Launch Design, and Xiaobing Yu, Chairman of Jiangxi Longsheng Automobile Company Limited.
The ambassador’s visits to Wuxi City and Jingdezhen City were intended to strengthen ties with Launch Design and learn more about the company’s manufacturing processes in both cities.
“Zyuulu visited Wuxi Launch Design in Jiangsu Province and Jiangxi Longsheng Automobile Company Limited in Jingdezhen City, subsidiaries of Launch Design,” according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.
Launch Design, which plans to visit Zambia to explore the feasibility of establishing an EV assembly plant, has expressed interest in partnering with Zambia provided a local partner is identified.
Both Wu and Xiaobing expressed optimism about Zambia’s potential to collaborate on one of the company’s proposed cooperation models, including establishing an EV assembly plant or a dealership for fully assembled electric vehicles.
“Besides electric vehicles, the company also offers electric motorcycles and bicycles, which are well-suited for the Zambian market,” Wu and Xiaobing said.
The company also emphasized its commitment to training local staff for the management and operation of its processes, marking a significant opportunity for skill development in Zambia’s growing EV sector.
