Former Lumezi MP, Zulu, handed another nine months suspended sentence for seditious practices

Lusaka Resident Magistrate, Faides Hamaundu, has sentenced former Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour for seditious practices, but suspended the sentence for 12 months on condition that he does not commit another offence within that period.

Zulu was convicted on one count of seditious practices but acquitted on two other similar charges.

The charges stemmed from remarks made between May 25 and May 27, 2024, in which Zulu alleged that President Hakainde Hichilema had ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security to eliminate him and other unnamed individuals—comments the prosecution argued were intended to incite public discontent.

He was also accused of declaring Eastern Province a “no-go area” and “danger zone” for Southerners, which the state said could incite hostility between communities.

In delivering judgment, Magistrate Hamaundu observed that Zulu was a first-time offender in the matter and took into account the fact that he had already lost his parliamentary seat and spent time in custody.

She said that while the offence was serious, the court opted for leniency by suspending the sentence.

This marks Zulu’s third conviction in under two months.

He is currently serving 12 months for defamation and 18 months for a previous seditious practices conviction at Lusaka Central Prison.
