Fulham edge Brentford 3-2 to keep European dream alive

0

Harry Wilson stepped off the bench to score a sensational winner as Fulham came from behind to beat Brentford 3-2, keeping their hopes of European football alive.

The Welsh winger curled home a stunning 20-yard effort just two minutes after Tom Cairney had levelled the score, leaving goalkeeper Mark Flekken rooted to the spot and securing Fulham’s all-time record Premier League points tally with one game to spare.

It was the second time this season Wilson has netted the winner against Brentford, prompting head coach Marco Silva to joke, “Harry is probably wondering why he doesn’t play against Brentford every single week!”

According to Sky Sports, Fulham trailed 2-1 at the break despite Raul Jimenez heading them in front early on from Adama Traore’s cross.

Brentford responded through Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, who controversially remained on the pitch despite appearing to commit a second bookable offence moments before scoring.

Referee Jarred Gillett, already under scrutiny for his role in the FA Cup final controversy involving Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson, once again found himself in the spotlight with both Wissa and Fulham’s Kenny Tete escaping second yellow cards.

Bryan Mbeumo had earlier missed a penalty after Bernd Leno saved from 12 yards, before Wissa turned in Christian Norgaard’s header to put Brentford ahead.

But Fulham’s second-half substitutions proved decisive. Cairney and Wilson turned the game around, lifting Fulham to eighth in the table—just a point behind Brentford—and in the hunt for a Europa Conference League spot.
