Govt concerned over delays in K23.7 million Munyeta boarding school project

Zambian government has expressed concern over the delayed completion of the K23.7 million Munyeta Boarding Secondary School project in Rufunsa District, despite the reported availability of funding from the World Bank.

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Joe Kalusa, who has taken over supervision of the project, said there was no justification for the delay, especially when similar community-led projects in five other districts were progressing well.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Provincial Principal Public Relations Officer, Logic Lukwanda, Kalusa made the remarks during a tour of the school site to assess construction challenges.

The project, funded under the Zambia Education Enhancement Project (ZEEP) through the Ministry of Education, began in July 2024 and was scheduled for completion by March, 2025.

It included the construction of five classrooms, 12 staff houses, a school hall, a computer lab, and a borehole.

“It is disappointing that a fully funded project has failed to meet its timeline. We have identified gaps and will address them immediately. I will personally supervise this project to ensure it is completed,” Kalusa said.

He also met with the local committee overseeing the project and stressed that government’s free education policy must be matched with adequate infrastructure.

In his part, Lusaka Province Education Officer, Terry Changwe, said delays in such projects undermined government’s education agenda.

“We will not let the government down. Come next year, children must be using this boarding school. With the President’s commitment to education, there is no excuse for slow progress,” Changwe stated.

Rufunsa Council Chairperson Kennedy Mailoni, who joined the site inspection, reiterated that President Hakainde Hichilema expected to be rapid progress on all education infrastructure projects.
