Government has emphasized the need for integrated sustainable solutions as the country’s water sector faces mounting pressure from climate change, population growth, and competing demands.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Romas Kamanga noted that the water sector was undergoing significant transformation globally and nationally, with new challenges requiring innovative approaches.

Kamanga made the call during the official opening of the 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) at Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka on Tuesday.

The forum, held under the theme “From Commitment to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for Vision 2030 and the SDGs,” also served as a platform for Zambia to prepare for the UN Water 2026 Conference in Abu Dhabi.

The three-day forum will cover water quality management, groundwater development, utility performance improvement, sanitation innovations, climate information systems, and digital technologies.

“The water sector is undergoing significant transformation globally and nationally. New challenges are emerging, requiring us to continuously improve the way we plan, manage, monitor, and protect our water resources and sanitation systems,” he said.

Kamanga added that rapid population growth, urban expansion, competing water demands, environmental pressures, and changing climatic conditions continued to place increasing demands on institutions and infrastructure.

“Rapid population growth, urban expansion, competing water demands, environmental pressures, and changing climatic conditions continue to place increasing demands on our institutions and infrastructure,” he said.

Kamanga noted that the realities required innovative approaches, stronger data systems, and greater integration.

He announced that Zambia, alongside the Republic of Finland, was nominated to Co-Chair Interactive Dialogue D on “Water for Cooperation” at the UN Water 2026 Conference scheduled for 8–10 December 2026.

“We are also encouraged by the increasing participation of young professionals and innovators who are bringing fresh ideas and technologies capable of improving efficiency, strengthening monitoring systems, and expanding access to services,” Kamanga said.
