President Hakainde Hichilema has re-assured Zambians that the tradition of having peaceful, credible and fair elections will be maintained in this year’s general elections.
The Head of State said despite ongoing political campaigns, the country would remain united through the election period.
President Hichilema gave the assurance during the Sabbath Music Fellowship organised by the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka on Saturday.
He expressed confidence that the August polls would be conducted without major disturbances.
“I can confirm and assure the people of Zambia that this election season will be peaceful. The nation will remain standing together. God will lead us through, we will have peaceful elections,” he said.
He acknowledged that one or two people may try to create trouble during the campaigns, but insisted the elections would generally be peaceful.
“We will keep the tradition of peaceful elections in our country. There shall be free, fair, credible and peaceful elections,” President Hichilema insisted.
He recalled that in the last season of elections, two months before the August 2021 vote, the country experienced what he described as “smoky” incidences and a lot of tear gas.
“It was smoky. There was a lot of tear gas around. There was a lot of negative stuff. But this election shall be different, much better than the last time we had elections,” President Hichilema said.
He reminded Zambians that election campaigns were an opportunity for politicians to express what they can do for the country and said national interest came first while personal interest would be taken care of later.
