Police in Solwezi have recorded a fatal mining accident involving an illegal miner who was buried alive while scavenging for minerals at Jikalakasa Community Mine.

North-Western Province Police Commanding officer, Brighton Siwale, said the incident occurred on May 18, 2025, around 18:50 hours in the Jikalakasa area of Solwezi District.

The case was reported to Kyawama Police Station an hour later by Naberty Kalaba, 25, of Mulemba Villa.

Kalaba reported that his nephew, Bornface Minganja, 29, also of Mulemba Villa, had died after the ground collapsed and trapped him inside a mine pit.

According to police, Kalaba, Minganja, Joshua Malembeka, 18, and three other unidentified men had entered the mining site illegally with the intent to extract minerals.

While digging, the ground gave way, trapping Minganja and Malembeka.

Kalaba and the others managed to rescue Malembeka and alerted the mine owners, who later used an excavator to retrieve Minganja’s body.

“Police visited the scene and found the body already retrieved, lying on the ground,” Siwale said. “A physical inspection revealed no visible injuries. The deceased likely died of suffocation as his body was covered in soil from the feet to the head.”

Minganja’s body has been deposited in the Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial arrangements.
