Germany secured their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds after substitute Deniz Undav scored twice, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner, to seal a 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast in their Group E clash.

Sky Sport, reports that the Germans looked set for a disappointing defeat after Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie gave the African side a deserved first-half lead. However, Undav emerged as the hero after coming off the bench to inspire a remarkable turnaround.

Ivory Coast dominated large periods of the opening half and were rewarded for their positive approach when Kessie found the net following excellent work from winger Yan Diomande.

The highly-rated attacker burst down the flank before delivering a low cross that was converted by the Ivorian skipper to hand his side the advantage.

Germany struggled to break down a disciplined Ivory Coast defence and appeared destined for an upset before coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced Undav just after the hour mark.

The substitution proved decisive as the forward levelled the scores in the 74th minute, meeting a precise cross from Nadiem Amiri with a well-taken volley.

With momentum swinging in Germany’s favour, both sides pushed for a winner in a tense finish. Just when the match seemed headed for a draw, Felix Nmecha threaded a pass into Undav’s path in the 94th minute, and the striker calmly slotted home to spark wild celebrations among the German players and supporters.

The victory sends Germany into the last 16 with a game to spare and maintains their unbeaten start to the tournament.

Undav’s brace also continued his impressive international form, taking his tally to nine goals in 11 appearances for the national team.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat was a bitter blow after their opening victory over Ecuador.

Despite an encouraging performance, they now face a crucial final group match as they seek to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
