The Japanese government has praised Zambia for its longstanding peacekeeping and peacebuilding contributions across the African continent.
Japanese Ministry of Defence Commissioner for the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency, Takeshi Ishikawa, said Zambia remained stable and peaceful since gaining independence in 1964.
Speaking during a courtesy call from Zambia’s Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu in Chiba City, Japan, on the sidelines of the DSEI Japan Expo, Ishikawa applauded Zambia’s efforts in promoting peace and security in Africa.
He said Zambia’s active participation in peacebuilding processes across the continent had earned it recognition as a “fountain of peace.”
“This calls for deeper collaboration between the Zambian and Japanese Ministries of Defence,” Ishikawa stated.
In response, Haamaundu underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation in defence and security between the two countries.
He noted that ties were expected to strengthen further once Japan’s Defence Attaché to Zambia presents their letters of credence.
“I wish to thank the Japanese government for inviting Zambia to participate in the DSEI Japan Expo, which has drawn hundreds of military personnel and exhibitors from around the world,” Haamaundu said.
Haamaundu was accompanied during the bilateral talks by Zambia National Service Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, Major General Reuben Mwewa, Ministry of Defence Director of Research, Planning and Projects, Ireen Musonda Habasimbi, and Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Tobias Mulimbika.
