High Court of Zambia Judge Justice Emelia Sunkutu has resigned barely a month of her suspension by President Hakainde Hichilema from her job.
President Hichilema, on May 28, 2025, suspended Sunkutu as High Court Judge, acting on the recommendations in the report presented to him by the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC).
The suspension of Sunkutu is said in exercise of the powers vested in the President pursuant to Article 144 (3) of the Constitution of Zambia.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said President Hichilema had received and accepted the notice of resignation of Sunkutu.
“Her resignation is pursuant to Article 142 (5) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia,” Hamasaka said.
He stated that the President had expressed profound gratitude to the Judge for her years of service and wished her well in her future endeavours.
