The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has confirmed that death of a dump truck driver at Kalumbila Mine, which occurred on June 21, 2025, at Sentinel Pit.
According to reports, the driver of the dump truck lost control of the vehicle whilst descending into the pit and hit a hole, and subsequently the truck caught fire.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lusaka, Mwaka Ndawa, the Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry said this fateful incident was a harrowing reminder of the critical importance of Occupational Safety and Health at work.
Ndawa noted that mining was the most vital pillar of the Nation’s economy, but that it was also one of the most hazardous workplaces.

“We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the company and fellow workers during this difficult time,” she said.
Ndawa stated that the loss of a single life during the course of duty was one too many, as a Ministry it recognize the urgent need to strengthen safety standards, to safeguard the lives of mine workers.
She assured that the Ministry would work in collaboration with the Mine Safety Department and other relevant authorities, to conduct a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident, and address the gaps that led to the fateful incident.
“We reiterate our commitment to ending mine accidents, by ensuring the highest standards of Occupational Safety and Health are observed across Zambia’s mining sector,” Ndawa said.
