Former President, Edgar Lungu, has called for calm and reaffirmed the Patriotic Front (PF)’s commitment to the Tonse Alliance, amid rising political tensions within the opposition coalition.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on April 25, 2025, Lungu—who chairs the Tonse Alliance—dismissed reports of division among senior PF leaders as “minor political machinations,” insisting the alliance remains united.
“All disciplinary letters issued to any PF or Alliance members are hereby revoked,” he declared, calling for an immediate ceasefire on internal disputes.
Lungu acknowledged the challenges of political collaboration but stressed the need for unity against a common political adversary.
“The Tonse Alliance was born from a collective desire to offer Zambians grounded hope. It is strong because of the PF,” saying, “Without PF, the Alliance would not command the fear and respect it does from our opponents.”
He further criticised recent disciplinary actions taken against senior PF members, labeling them “disrespectful” and stressing they should not proceed without his approval as Chairperson.
To address the matter, Lungu directed the PF Secretary General to convene a Central Committee meeting, which he will co-chair.
He also appointed PF vice-president Given Lubinda to act on his behalf in both party and Alliance matters during his absence.
“All communications will now go through Hon. Lubinda, and members must respect the party’s leadership and Alliance integrity,” Lungu stated.
