A 47-year-old man from Southern Province has pleaded not guilty to a charge of incest after being accused of sexually abusing his seven-year-old daughter while caring for her at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Cancer Disease Hospital in Lusaka.

Appearing before Magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli on Friday, the accused denied the charge and is set to stand trial beginning June 9, 2025.

According to the indictment, the man is charged with incest under Section 159(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. The alleged offence occurred between September 20, 2024, and March 11, 2025.

A police report dated March 17, 2025, stated that on March 11, Kabwata Police received a call from a social worker at the Cancer Disease Hospital.

The social worker alleged that the suspect had been abusing his daughter while attending to her medical needs.

The report indicated that the accused routinely bathed the child late at night around 22:00 hours, drawing concern from other caregivers in the ward.

Witnesses claimed the child often cried during these times and noted that the accused bathed with his daughter, with both their clothes left hanging on the bathroom door.

The unusual behavior raised alarm, prompting the bed-siders to inform hospital staff.

A medical examination conducted shortly thereafter reportedly revealed signs of sexual abuse, including fresh injuries to the girl’s private parts.

The hospital’s social welfare officer reported the matter to police, who issued a medical report form and launched an investigation.

The man was arrested and formally charged with incest.
