Police on the Copperbelt Province have arrested and charged a 46-year-old woman of Magum Compound for allegedly assaulting her two biological children, aged 11 and 7.
The incident occurred on September 9, 2026 around 19:00 hours in the Magum area of Kalulushi District, according to Rae Hamoonga, Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner.
In a statement issued in Kitwe on Sunday, Hamoonga said the matter was reported at Kalulushi Police Station the same day at about 23:45 hours,
According to Hamoonga, the case drew widespread public attention after a video and details relating to the alleged assault circulated on social media platforms over the weekend.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the disagreement began when the mother instructed the two boys to assist her in fetching water.
He said the children refused, and as punishment she allegedly ordered them not to eat anything while she was away.
“The matter has attracted significant public attention after a video and information relating to the incident circulated widely on social media,” Hamoonga said.
He alleged that upon returning home, the mother found that the children had eaten nshima which she had reportedly reserved for their father which angered her.
“She allegedly picked up a kettle and assaulted the two children. As a result of the alleged assault, the 11-year-old sustained injuries to the eye, head and right hand,” Hamoonga said.
He stated that the younger brother, aged 7, sustained injuries to the forehead and nose.

“The children were rescued by a concerned member of the public who reported the matter to the Police. They were issued with medical reports and taken to hospital for treatment,” Hamoonga said.
Following investigations, officers apprehended the suspect and has been formally charged with Assault on a Child and was detained at Kalulushi Police Station pending further court processes.
“The Zambia Police Service commends the concerned member of the public who intervened to ensure that the children received protection and that the matter was brought to the attention of law enforcement,” Hamoonga noted.
He also reminded members of the public that children were protected by law and their identities and dignity must be safeguarded in matters involving alleged abuse.
Hamoonga urged people to refrain from sharing names, photographs or other identifying information of children involved in such cases on social media.
