The Mozambican government has praised late former President Edgar Lungu’s legacy, noting his vital contributions to regional peace and development.
President Lungu passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at a hospital in Pretoria, where he had been receiving treatment for several weeks.
In a statement issued in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by Zambia’s First Secretary for Press and Tourism, Inutu Mwanza, the Mozambican Ambassador to that country, Ana Nemba, highlighted president Lungu’s dedication to strengthening Zambia’s leadership role within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
“Ambassadors accredited to the African Union have been visiting the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Addis Ababa to sign the Book of Condolences in honor of the late Former President of Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away last week in South Africa,” Mwanza said in the statenent
Similary, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Malawi in Ethiopia, Diana Nkomba Jere, also offered condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Malawi, extending heartfelt sympathies to Zambia during this difficult time.
The Namibian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mbapeua Muvangua, remarked that former President Lungu’s passing was a profound loss not only for Zambia but also for the entire African continent.
He reaffirmed Namibia’s solidarity with the people of Zambia during this period of national mourning.
Muvangua also reflected on Zambia’s steadfast support during Namibia’s liberation struggle, an act of friendship and solidarity that remains deeply cherished by the Namibian people.
“The Ambassadors were received at the Embassy by Tom Michelo, Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Zambia to Ethiopia,” Mwanza concluded.

Back home, President of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) Reverend Dr.Trevor Mwamba noted that there was a feeling of pain and grieving in the Lungu family, in the party which he led, and in the nation.
“In this kaleidoscope of feelings in Zambia, I encourage Zambians to unify in our collective thoughts and feelings, by honouring the life of our former president, Edgar Lungu. He had his strength. He had his weaknesses. He was one of us,” he said.
“As Zambians what we need is not division; what we need in Zambia is not hatred; what we need in Zambia is not violence or lawlessness; but love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice toward those who suffer within our country,” he added.
