‘Naysaying zealots,’ UPND dismisses allegations of destabilising Socialist Party

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has dismissed allegations of destabilizing the opposition Socialist Party (SP) following the resignation of SP Central Committee Member, Paul Moonga.

UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson, Obvious Mwaliteta, described the allegations as a desperate attempt by the SP to cover up after being “caught pants down” scheming to take over the leadership of the Tonse Alliance.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, Mwaliteta said the SP had failed to account for its internal schemes and was now scapegoating by implicating the ruling party.

He urged the SP to confess and seek forgiveness from its partners, alleging that a leaked audio recording had exposed the party’s plans at a time when the Tonse leader was receiving treatment in South Africa.

“The allegations are not only disingenuous but malicious—a vain attempt to drag us into their internal squabbles and schemes, in which we have absolutely no interest,” Mwaliteta said.

He emphasized that the UPND valued a strong opposition that provided checks and balances, not one “hellbent on a witch-hunt after being trapped in its own nocturnal schemes.”

“Our focus is on serving the people and rebuilding an economy left in ruins by the Patriotic Front. It is the PF leadership and their collaborators who have converged on the Tonse Alliance, trying once again to deceive Zambians,” he added.

Mwaliteta accused the SP of manufacturing its own troubles and urged it not to drag the UPND into its internal crises.

He described the SP’s tactics as outdated and lacking decency, stating that the UPND remained focused on stabilizing the economy, improving governance, and cleaning up politics.

“The mines have been revived, Zambians are enjoying free education, and farmers are happier than ever with the timely delivery of farming inputs. That’s our focus,” he said.

Mwaliteta further encouraged UPND members to remain focused and urged Zambians not to be swayed by what he termed “naysaying zealots.”
