President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned the US$490 million Kafulafuta Dam project in Masaiti District. The project aims at improving access to clean water for Ndola, Luanshya, Masaiti, and Mpongwe districts.
The President, who is on a two-day working visit to the Copperbelt, said the completed dam would not only enhance clean water supply and sanitation but also support irrigation efforts critical for agricultural productivity.
“Water supply is fundamental to development, agriculture and sanitation. This project is a major step forward in addressing the long-standing water challenges in the region,” President Hichilema said.
The Kafulafuta Dam is expected to boost water harvesting capacity and contribute to economic transformation in the beneficiary districts.
Earlier in the day, President Hichilema met with traditional leaders from Masaiti and Mpongwe districts. He praised the continued partnership between his government and traditional authorities.
“We are grateful for your support since assuming office. Chiefs play an important role in national development, and your cooperation is appreciated,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional leaders, Chief Machiya of Mpongwe pledged continued support to the UPND government.
“We understand the mandate of your leadership and remain committed to supporting the government’s development agenda,” the chief stated.
The Head of State also inspected the dewatering process at the new Luanshya Mine, commonly referred to as Shaft 28, where he promised infrastructure improvements.
Later, he interacted with Luanshya residents, assuring them of government efforts to address their developmental needs.
