Police in Ndola say a 29-year-old man is nursing gunshot wounds in hospital after he was attacked and robbed of K120,000 by unknown criminals.

Copperbelt Police Chief Pathias Siandenge confirmed the incident on Wednesday, identifying the victim as Alfred Chilufya, a cash collector for a named company.

Chilufya was attacked at the 24/7 MTN booth in the Front Page area of Kabwata, within Ndola’s central business district, after collecting K120,000 from Baluba along Kitwe Road.

“After counting the money at the booth around 21:30 hours, Chilufya sat on a motorbike ready to leave when three armed criminals with a pistol ambushed him,” Siandenge  said.

The attackers shot Chilufya in the left leg, causing him to fall off the bike.

Despite being injured, he resisted surrendering the money, prompting the criminals to shoot him in the right leg before seizing the bag.

“The assailants also kicked and stepped on his head, resulting in bleeding from his ears,” he added.

A nearby mob attempted to intervene, but the criminals fired into the air to disperse them before fleeing the scene in a white unregistered Toyota Mark X.

Chilufya was rushed to Ndola Teaching Hospital, where police later found him in pain and being treated for gunshot wounds to both legs. His condition is reported to be slightly stable.

Police recovered empty cartridges at the scene and secured the victim’s motorbike at Ndola Central Police Station.

A manhunt for the suspects has since been launched, but no arrests or recoveries have been made so far.
