A group of nine youths from Lusaka’s Matero township has landed in serious legal trouble after allegedly orchestrating a series of burglaries that resulted in the theft of goods worth over K1.5 million.

The accused, aged between 20 and 35, have been named as Peter Musonda, Mike Nyemu, Clifford Sitima, Wilson Phiri, Pethias Musonda, Edison Daka, Julius Daka, Felix Kasonde, and Dingani Munthali.

They are facing multiple charges of breaking into buildings and committing felonies.

According to the indictment, the alleged stealing spree began between January 11 and 13 this year, when Musonda, Sitima, and Nyemu allegedly broke into Assi Choice Store in Lusaka and stole property worth K129,680.

The stolen items included 12 assorted solar batteries, four motor vehicle batteries, three amplifiers, three generators, a 43-inch television, a water pump, a speaker, and six inverters, all belonging to one Ali Assl.

In March, Sitima and Edison Daka allegedly struck again—this time targeting Menov Enterprises Limited, from which they reportedly stole 33 bags of broiler starter feed and three bags of pig grower feed, valued at K27,515.

The feed was the property of Christopher Lungu.

Later that same month, the group allegedly carried out another large-scale break-in at Home Plus Limited.

Eight of the accused, including Musonda and Nyemu, are said to have stolen 10 generators, several solar panels, five water pumps, seven solar batteries, 13 home theatre systems, 17 television sets, and 38 mobile phones—valued at K355,628.

On March 7, the group allegedly executed one of their boldest heists yet.

Prosecutors say they broke into Best of the Best Shop and got away with one Villaon V20 phone, 54 assorted phones, six computer monitors, various Bluetooth and Calus speakers, and K357,544 in cash.

The total value of the stolen goods and cash was pegged at K972,572.

The case is currently before the courts as investigations continue.
