Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Nicholas Phiri, has expressed disappointment over the quality of work executed by some local contractors engaged in drainage construction in the city.
Phiri stated that the Ministry prioritized local small and micro businesses as target beneficiaries for such projects to enable them participate in the country’s economic activities.
He said this on Wednesday in Lusaka shortly after inspecting the Mumbwa drainage works and Simon Mwewa Lane market.
Phiri, however, expressed disappointment by the lack of patriotism exhibited by local contractors as can be seen by the quality of work done.
“For decentralisation to be successfully implemented, the government expects local contractors to carry out works with speed, patriotism, quality, diligence and responsibility,” he said.
Meanwhile, Phiri urged traders to refrain from subletting their stands at Simon Mwewa Lane and other markets in the city.
He advised marketeers to always liaise with the local authority when seeking trading spaces in council-run markets, rather than relying on individuals who claim to have influence.
“The Ministry will continue to provide oversight and policy direction to ensure markets are properly managed,” Phiri reaffirmed.
He also called on both council police and state police to strengthen law enforcement in markets to uphold order and security.
