Police officer hit by speeding driver on Great North Road

The Zambia Police Service has confirmed that a traffic police officer was injured after being hit by a driver who refused to stop during a speed enforcement operation in Lusaka.

The accident was recorded at Ngwerere Police Station and occurred on July 23, 2026 around 14:50 hours along the Great North Road near the Zanimuone area.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the victim had been identified as Sergeant Warren Mulela, aged 37, a Traffic Police Officer who was on duty at the time.

Preliminary investigations show that Sergeant Mulela was conducting road traffic speed enforcement duties using a speed camera when he signalled the driver of a Toyota light truck, registration number CAG 2822, to stop after the vehicle was detected exceeding the prescribed speed limit.

Chilabi said the driver failed to stop, hit the officer, and later abandoned the motor vehicle before fleeing the scene.

“As a result of the impact, Sergeant Mulela sustained injuries and was rushed to Chipata Level One Hospital where he received medical treatment and was later discharged,” he said.

Chilabi stated that the driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified and remains at large.

Police in Lusaka have since impounded the Toyota light truck to facilitate further investigations aimed at tracing and apprehending the suspect.

“Motorists are reminded that failure to stop when directed by a police officer is a serious offence that endangers lives, obstructs law enforcement operations, and undermines road safety,” Chilabi said.

He appealed to members of the public with information on the driver of vehicle CAG 2822 to report to the nearest police station.

Chilabi further urged motorists to exercise caution and cooperate with officers conducting traffic enforcement.
