The Zambia Police Service in Lusaka says it is investigating a case of attempted murder which occurred in Kabwata Site and Service on June 13, 2026, around 23:00 hours.

Kabwata Police Station received a report from a concerned citizen, aged 37, of Kabwata Site and Service, that a 40-year-old woman of the same area had been shot by a man believed to be her acquaintance.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on the material night, the suspect drove the victim to her residence.

“For reasons yet to be established, he allegedly shot her in the forehead using a firearm believed to be a pistol before fleeing the scene,” Chilabi said.

Police officers responded and found the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the forehead.

The victim was immediately transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was admitted and was reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect has been identified as Mwanauta Chansa, a Warrant Officer in the Zambia Army.

Further investigations indicate that after the incident, the suspect proceeded to the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Centre (KKPTC), also known as NANKING, where he allegedly ingested pesticide.

“He was later rushed to Maina Soko Medical Centre for medical attention but left the hospital without authorisation and proceeded to Mtendere Compound, where he allegedly ingested pesticide for a second time,” Chilabi said.

He said the suspect was subsequently located and rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Chilabi said On June 15, 2026, around 03:00 hours, the suspect was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital and his body has been deposited in the mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

“The Zambia Police Service is working to establish all the facts surrounding the incident, including the circumstances leading to the shooting and the suspect’s death,” Chilabi said.

He stated that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
