President Hichilema reaffirms commitment to maternal, newborn health

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffairmed government’s commitment to prioritizing maternal and newborn health, recognizing that health remained a cornerstone of the country’s development agenda.

He also reaffirmed government’s strong partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders in addressing Zambia’s health challenges collectively.

President Hichilema said this in a facebook post on June 10, 2025 after a courtesy call from the WHO Resident Representative to Zambia, Dr. Clement Lasuba at State House in Lusaka on Tuesday.

“During our engagement, we held productive discussions on strengthening our collaboration to enhance Zambia’s capacity in the preparedness, prevention, and response to public health threats,” he wrote.

President Hichilema also announced that Zambia would host the WHO Regional Committee meeting in August this year, an affirmation of the continued collaboration and trust between WHO and the Zambian government.

He also welcomed the planned launch of the National Cholera Elimination Plan, a comprehensive blueprint aimed at catalyzing a multisectoral response to control and ultimately eliminate cholera in Zambia.

“As a government, we are focused on growing the economy to enable the allocation of increased domestic resources to the health sector,” President Hichilema said.

He added that through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the government would continue to invest in ensuring that every health facility across the country had a functional maternity wing, bringing quality healthcare closer to the people.
