Race on to complete Zambia’s landmark airborne geophysical survey by July 2026 —Official

Zambia’s ambitious nationwide airborne geophysical survey, among the largest in Africa, is on course to complete data acquisition by July 2026, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to enhance geological mapping and boost mineral exploration.

Covering an impressive 2.7 million line kilometres, the survey uses magnetic, radiometric, and scalar gravity measurements to provide high-resolution geological data.

Officials say the results would support government planning, attract private investment, and position Zambia as a premier destination for mineral exploration in the region.

Simon Bosch, Chairman of Xcalibur Smart Mapping South Africa, speaking at the just-ended 2025 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka in Lusaka, revealed that over 40 percent of the magnetic and radiometric data has already been captured, with survey operations progressing from western Zambia toward the east.

“The survey employs a fleet of six air tractors, with plans to expand to eight by year-end,” Bosch said.

“Aircraft are strategically based in Kasama, Livingstone, and Solwezi to ensure efficient coverage and logistical support.”

Advanced technologies, including electromagnetics and gravity gradiometry, are being applied in select areas for detailed exploration.

In Mongu, these systems are mapping key blocks to determine sand thickness—critical information for assessing mineral potential.
Preliminary results from western Zambia have revealed hidden geological structures, including a potential extension of the Copperbelt beneath the Kafue sands.

“While these methods do not directly detect minerals, they are essential for identifying promising mineral zones and guiding focused exploration,” Mr Bosch explained.

Once completed, the survey is expected to deliver a comprehensive, high-resolution map of Zambia’s subsurface geology, offering a foundation for both public and private exploration initiatives and potentially transforming the country’s mineral exploration landscape by reducing risks and costs.
