The Socialist Party (SP), whose doctrine is to champion socialist economic and social policies, says it will remain resolved to providing checks and balances to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
Party spokesperson Frank Bwalya said despite the political space allegedly shrinking, the party was equal to the task.
“UPND  will  become increasingly brutal in 2023 because of being insecure and will restrict the democratic space of opposition parties and also abuse officers of the Zambia Police Service to detain and arrest opposition politicians on trumped-up charges,”  Bwalya, a former Zambia’s ambassador to Australia said.
Bwalya said this  during a briefing in Zambia’s mining city on Monday, December 12, 2022 when he gave an update on the performance of the party this year and on other national matters.
Bwalya ,a former Catholic  priest, said  SP would continue  speaking on behalf of the people despite the shrinking democratic environment .
He said the country was not likely  to benefit from the minerals and other natural resources in the country because those in government were  ‘puppets’ and capitalists who wanted to enrich themselves at the expense of the suffering majority.
“The UPND may talk nicely about something, but at the end of the day, what will happen is something else. So these lies and inconsistencies by the UPND has made many Zambians lose trust and confidence in the UPND,” he said.
