The Socialist Party (SP) has announced plans to hold a protest on May 16, 2025, in response to the continued theft of medical drugs from Zambia’s public health system.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Youth Secretary, Stanley Muba’sa, the demonstration will begin in Lusaka’s town centre, with participants assembling at the Freedom Statue before marching to State House.
Muba’sa emphasized that the protest will be peaceful and conducted within the confines of the law.
“This demonstration is being organized in the interest of ordinary Zambians, who have been forced to buy essential medicines from private pharmacies due to persistent shortages in public health facilities,” he said.
Muba’sa attributed the shortages to systematic theft and looting by what he described as a “clique of thieves,” and accused the current administration of failing to address the issue.
“Some senior officials may be complicit. Their reluctance to act suggests they could be benefiting from the ongoing theft,” Muba’sa claimed.
He referenced the recent exposé by United States Ambassador to Zambia, Michael Gonzales, which led to the suspension of K1.4 billion in aid, as evidence of the crisis and government inaction.
Muba’sa argued that the continued failure to curb the theft of medical supplies puts citizens’ lives at risk, and criticised recent arrests of minor figures in the scandal as a mere public relations stunt.
“Citizens cannot be fooled. Donors cannot be cheated either,” he stated.
