Stop playing politics with Nawakwi’s death, Forum for Democracy and Development urges politicians to act responsibly

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has urged politicians to refrain from politicizing the death of party president, Edith Nawakwi, and instead allow the family and party to mourn in peace and dignity.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, FDD spokesperson, Anthony Chibuye, expressed concern that some politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties were attempting to mix politics with emotions and facts.

“We appeal to all politicians to desist from such acts and allow the family to mourn our late leader in a dignified manner,” Chibuye said.

He noted that while the party appreciated the outpouring of love and condolences from Zambians, including the government, it was important to respect the mourning process.

“It is highly insensitive at this hour for either government or any other entity or person to make statements that could cause distress or misinterpretations among the party membership and the family of President Nawakwi,” he said.

Chibuye cautioned government officials against presenting personal sentiments as official positions, and similarly urged opposition figures to avoid spreading their personal views during this sensitive period.

He emphasized the importance of observing cultural norms during mourning.

“In our African culture, when someone dies, we accord them the utmost respect. This is not the time to debate who loved or hated who,” Chibuye said.

He added that the party’s focus was on ensuring that Nawakwi was given a dignified sendoff befitting her service to both the FDD and the nation.

Chibuye further warned that the party would respond at an appropriate time to any issues being raised during the mourning period.

He also appealed to the media to exercise professionalism and avoid pushing misleading narratives.

“Journalists must remain noble in their duties. Journalism is a profession built on courage, facts, and consistency,” Chibuye said.
