Tonse Pamodzi Alliance rejects Electoral Commission’s advisory, vows to continue rallies

The Tonse Pamodzi Alliance has rejected the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s advisory curtailing presidential campaigns from June 19, insisting that campaign programmes for president Brian Mundubile and his running mate in Eastern, Muchinga and Northern Provinces would proceed as planned.

ECZ had resolved that candidates may proceed with scheduled programmes up to Friday, 19th June 2026, after which all campaigns must follow an official Presidential Campaign Timetable to be developed and administered by the Commission.

ECZ also summoned all 14 presidential candidates to a meeting on Monday, June 22, 2026.

Presidential Spokesperson, George Chisanga, said the Alliance was alerted through social media to the ECZ advisory dated 18 June 2026, in which the Commission expressed concern over “undocumented lack of order” in presidential campaigns.

Chisanga expressed concern with the tone and timing of the advisory, arguing that ECZ failed to highlight specific violations or infractions committed by presidential candidates to justify the measures.

He argued that the Alliance had arranged its affairs in strict accordance with the campaign timetable and guidelines already issued by ECZ.

Chisanga stated that advance teams had been deployed to various locations, including Eastern, Muchinga and Northern Provinces, in readiness for the presidential candidate and his running mate.

“To have the teams pulled back to Lusaka at notice of less than twenty four hours will not only be unfair and unjust but will also result in huge irrecoverable expenses,” he said.

Chisanga demanded that ECZ withdraw the advisory, saying it had negated the imperative foundation for a free fair and credible election.

He also argued that wide stakeholder engagement should be undertaken without pulling campaign teams from deployed areas, given the time remaining before elections.

Chisanga also accused the Republican President, who is also the ruling party’s presidential candidate, of moving freely around the country without following ECZ timetable or guidelines.

“We wish to reiterate our previous statements made and directed to the ECZ in which we demanded that they act as an independent umpire,” he said.

Chisanga insisted that the campaign programmes in Eastern, Muchinga and Northern Provinces would proceed as earlier planned and notified to the public.

“President Brian Mundubile will be represented at the ECZ stakeholders meeting by duly appointed Electoral Agents,” he said.
