Three girls have tragically drowned while swimming in a water-filled quarry pit in Kalamba village, Kawambwa district.
The deceased are Grace Musonda and Belindah Kabwe, both grade 7 pupils at Kalamba Primary School, and Beauty Mwansa, a grade 9 pupil at Ntumba Chushi Secondary School.
In an interview, Luapula Province Police Commissioner, Mwala Yuyi, explained that the girls were with four others who managed to swim to safety.
Yuyi stated that the group of seven girls had gone swimming at the Chimbotela quarry site, which had filled with water following heavy rainfall.

The girls decided to swim into a deeper part of the pit, holding onto each other.
While four managed to reach the shore, the three girls became stuck in the mud and drowned.
Acting District Education Board Secretary Noreen Kabuto expressed sorrow over the incident.
“It is very unfortunate to lose such young girls. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families,” Kabuto said.
