The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has confirmed the death of two locomotive drivers following a fatal accident in which two locomotives derailed and capsized at a bridge in Mbozi District, Songwe Region, Tanzania.
The accident occurred around 03:00 hours on Monday, April 21, 2025, at bridge number 262, located at Kilometer 885+500 in Mbozi District.
According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday by the TAZARA Communications Department, investigations into the cause of the derailment are ongoing.
The locomotives, which were defective and travelling without cargo from Chozi in Zambia to the Mbeya Workshop in Tanzania for repairs, derailed and capsized at the bridge.
“Emergency services, including the police and fire brigade, responded promptly upon receiving reports of the accident,” the statement read.

However, both drivers were found dead at the scene due to the severe impact of the crash.
“The loss of lives is deeply regretted. Both governments and the respective families have been informed,” TAZARA stated.
The company conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.
