The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has announced a disruption in water supply for residents of Chingola District following raw water quality challenges affecting Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited.
Ministry Permanent Secretary Romas Kamanga said the deterioration in raw water quality had impacted operations of the water ulitiy, leading to service interruptions in parts of the district.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Kamanga stated that the affected facilities included Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation (MWSSC’s) two water treatment plants located at the Konkola Copper Mines Mine area and the Kafue River intake.
He stated that the shutdown of the plants would remain in place pending further assessment and confirmation of safe operating conditions.
“The deterioration in raw water quality has necessitated the temporary shutdown of MWSC’s two water treatment plants located at the KCM Mine area and the Kafue River intake, pending further assessment and confirmation of safe operating conditions,” Kamanga said.
He said Technical teams were currently conducting comprehensive assessments and implementing urgent remedial measures aimed at restoring normal water supply services as quickly and safely as possible.

“Technical teams are currently on the ground conducting comprehensive assessments and implementing urgent remedial measures aimed at restoring normal water supply services as quickly and safely as possible,” Kamanga said.
He added that the ministry continued to receive regular updates from MWSSC and was closely monitoring the situation to ensure a timely resolution.
Kamanga said to mitigate the impact on affected communities, the Ministry had directed MWSSC to deploy all available water bowsers to Chingola and prioritise the provision of water to the most affected areas, as well as critical institutions and essential service points.
He expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the interruption and assured residents that government agencies were working closely with MWSSC to stabilise the situation and restore water supply at the earliest opportunity.
“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available, while members of the public are encouraged to use available water resources prudently and responsibly to minimise the effects of the disruption,” Kamanga said.
