A 30-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter have died after drowning in a well in Ntindi Village, Nakonde District, Muchinga Province.

Muchinga Police Commissioner, Dennis Moola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, identifying the deceased as Magret Nambela and her child.

According to police, the two reportedly drowned while Nambela was intoxicated.

She had been visiting her mother in Ntindi Village from Kalolani Village in Tanzania, where she lived with her husband, Abraham Mwamulima, 37.

“After visiting her mother, the deceased began drinking locally brewed beer while carrying her child on her back. She later slipped into a deep well,” Moola said.

The incident was reported to Nakonde Police Post, and a combined team of police and fire officers retrieved the bodies from the well.

Moola said no visible injuries were observed during the inspection of the bodies, which have been taken to Nakonde Urban Clinic mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

Police have opened an inquiry into the matter.
