Zambia recorded 8,809 road traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2025, resulting in 498 fatalities, according to Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.
Lusaka Province accounted for the highest number of accidents, with 4,753 cases (54 percent), followed by the Copperbelt with 1,216 cases (13.8 percent).
The police reported 410 fatal accidents nationwide, alongside 832 serious accidents that left 1,550 people with serious injuries and 1,814 minor accidents leading to 2,607 injuries.
The total number of casualties in the first quarter reached 4,655, a 698-person increase from 2024’s total of 3,957.
Concern was raised over the involvement of children under 16, with 342 affected—51 fatalities, 115 serious injuries, and 176 minor injuries.
Of these, 218 were male and 124 female, most of whom were pedestrians and passengers.
The police also recorded 35,748 road traffic offences, resulting in K18,796,511 in admissions of guilty, an increase of K4,875,665 from 33,310 offences in the same period of 2024.
Hamoonga attributed the rising accident figures to human error and non-compliance with traffic regulations, urging the public to work with the police in promoting road safety.
