Zambia Athletics (ZA) has launched a nationwide talent identification programme, Catch Them Young, aimed at unearthing and nurturing athletic potential in schools and rural communities across the country.
Speaking at the launch on Saturday in Lusaka, ZA President Major Bernard Bwalya, described the initiative as a pivotal step in broadening the country’s athletic talent pool beyond traditional urban centres.
“We are not just focusing on the usual crop of athletes. There’s immense potential in rural communities that must be tapped,” Bwalya said.
He explained that the programme’s first phase had already commenced with district-level community trials in Kasama, Chinsali, and Kapiri Mposhi, and plans are underway to roll out the initiative to all districts.
Bwalya stated that the project would run on two parallel tracks: community-based trials and talent scouting in schools and universities.

To facilitate this, ZA had partnered with the Zambia Schools Sports Association (ZASSA) and the Zambia Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) to ensure a coordinated and inclusive national effort.
To support talent tracking and data management, ZA has donated four laptops to ZASSA and ZUSA and plans to equip each district with at least one computer dedicated to the programme.
“This initiative goes beyond winning medals,” Bwalya added.
He stated: “It’s about contributing to national development, promoting discipline, and creating role models for our youth.”
The Catch Them Young programme is expected to enhance Zambia’s future athletic prospects while instilling positive values and providing opportunities for young people nationwide.
