Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency suspends non-compliant packaged water brands in Ndola, Kitwe

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has suspended the supply of several non-compliant packaged drinking water brands in Ndola and Kitwe following an enforcement operation in the two towns.

The agency said it restricted a total of 113 cases of packaged water, valued at K7,475, for violating the Zambian Standard — ZS 388: Bottled Drinking Water Specification — and the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.

The action followed market surveillance and factory inspections conducted this year.

ZCSA Manager for Communications and Public Relations, Brian Hatyoka, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.

“Some packaged water brands were not registered with the agency, while others were suspected to be unsafe for human consumption,” Hatyoka said.

He explained that the agency had taken precautionary measures by suspending the affected products to ensure the companies implement corrective actions and achieve full compliance.

Hatyoka reiterated ZCSA’s commitment to enforcing compulsory standards to safeguard consumer health and safety.

Ahead of World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2025 — under the theme ‘Food Safety: Science in Action’ — Hatyoka urged consumers to remain vigilant and purchase food and beverage products only from reputable outlets.

He further encouraged the public to report any suspicious or unsafe products to ZCSA, warning that consuming unverified products could pose serious health risks.

ZCSA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, established to administer, maintain, and enforce compulsory standards that protects public health, consumer rights, and the environment.
