Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has revealed that government lawyers in South Africa have commenced engagements with the family of former President Edgar Lungu.
Mweetwa made the disclosure on Tuesday evening during an interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
He explained that the government was working to ensure an amicable and respectful resolution was reached to allow for President Lungu’s remains to be repatriated and laid to rest in Zambia.
“The government is in active communication with the family of the late President with the aim of settling this matter in a manner that is both amicable and expeditious, in line with the wishes of the family, the government, and the people of Zambia,” Mweetwa said.
He added that the government was optimistic that the family’s concerns can be addressed through ongoing dialogue, as part of an alternative dispute resolution mechanism aimed at bringing closure to the matter ahead of the court’s final ruling.
Mweetwa stressed that the Zambian people desire for President Lungu to be buried in his homeland, in accordance with the long-standing national tradition of interring former Heads of State at the official Presidential burial site.
