The Department of Immigration has secured 13 convictions for various immigration-related offences, reinforcing its commitment to internal security and enforcement of the Immigration and Deportation Act.
Chief Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the most notable convictions occurred in Livingstone.
In one case, the Livingstone Magistrate Court sentenced 22-year-old Congolese national Edson Bisumikamo to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for illegal entry, unlawful stay, and attempting to obtain a Zambian National Registration Card (NRC) by false pretences.
“Bisumikamo was apprehended at the Social Welfare Offices after a referral from the National Registration Office, where he attempted to fraudulently acquire an NRC,” Nshinka stated. Investigations revealed he entered Zambia illegally in October 2024 and remained in the country unlawfully until his arrest.
In another case, 55-year-old Zimbabwean truck driver Pamire Ngoni was convicted and fined K15,000 or, in default, sentenced to three months simple imprisonment for failing to report to the nearest Immigration Officer upon entry.
Ngoni was arrested at the National Parks and Wildlife Checkpoint after officers discovered his passport had no entry endorsement.
Authorities later confirmed that he had entered Zambia on 15th April 2025 through the Kazungula One Stop Border Post, en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Meanwhile, 41-year-old Motswana national Oboifeng Muhammad Phaladi was fined K15,000 or three months simple imprisonment after being convicted of illegal entry.
He was arrested during a joint night patrol with the Zambia Police Service on 19th April 2025.
Investigations revealed that he entered Zambia via an undesignated point on the Zambezi River using a canoe, reportedly seeking medical attention from a traditional healer.
Elsewhere, a routine operation by the Kafue Immigration Office on the same day led to the apprehension of eight suspected illegal immigrants—six Burundians and two Zimbabweans—aged between 20 and 37, at the Kafue Checkpoint and surrounding Makeni area. They remain in detention pending prosecution.
These operations brought the total number of immigration-related apprehensions nationwide on 8th May 2025 to 34.
During the same period, the Department of Immigration also removed 14 illegal immigrants from Zambia and denied entry to four individuals who failed to meet entry requirements.
