President Hakainde Hichilema has called on the Church to partner with government in promoting peace and unity, which he said were essential for national development.
Speaking during a church service at Mushili Central Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ndola on Saturday, President Hichilema said the atmosphere in the country had significantly improved since he came to power.
“Like Honourable Matambo said earlier, four years ago it was difficult for me and my team to even attend a church service. But now, peace is reigning,” he said.
He urged the Church to play a key role in reinforcing the nation’s moral values and uniting Zambians across political and social divides.
Earlier, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo recounted the hostile environment on the Copperbelt during Hichilema’s time in opposition, saying, “Four years ago, we attended a church service here at Mushili Centre with more than 200 police officers keeping vigil.”
Traditional leaders also echoed the President’s message. Chief Nkambo of Masaiti, who was in attendance, said both the Church and traditional leaders were vital stakeholders in fostering peace, unity, and dialogue as Zambia navigates challenges such as climate change.
The service was presided over by Copperbelt SDA Conference, President Moses Muyunda.
President Hichilema was accompanied by key government officials including Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe, Water Minister Mike Mposha, Green Economy Minister Collins Nzovu, Transport Minister Frank Tayali, and UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda.
