Lusaka City Council warns against illegal waste dumping, threatens K15,000 fines

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has issued a warning to residents against engaging in illegal waste dumping, cautioning that offenders risk prosecution under the Solid Waste Management Act No. 7 of 2018.

LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, said the council was intensifying enforcement to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, which she described as a major threat to public health and environmental safety.

“Illegal dumping of waste is a prosecutable offense, and individuals found guilty will face fines of up to K15,000,” Mwamba said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

She urged all residents to adhere to proper waste management practices to help maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Mwamba explained that simple adherence to waste disposal guidelines can significantly reduce pollution, prevent blockages of drainage systems, and lower the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera.

“We encourage residents to throw garbage in refuse bins, buy and sell from designated trading areas, avoid littering from moving vehicles, and keep their surroundings clean, green, and healthy,” she said.

Mwamba also urged households to subscribe to licensed solid waste management companies to ensure regular and safe collection of waste from homes.

She emphasized that the council remained committed to delivering effective waste management services while enforcing regulations without fear or favour.

“Illegal waste dumping will not be tolerated. We will not hesitate to take action against those who flout the law. We are counting on the public’s support in our efforts to keep Lusaka clean and healthy,” Mwamba said.
