The Zambia Police Service in Lusaka is investigating a case of child desertion after a female infant was allegedly abandoned in a pit latrine in Chipata Compound.

The incident occurred on the night of December 21, 2025, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi.

Police said a 53-year-old resident reported hearing a baby crying from a pit latrine at his residence. Upon checking, he discovered a live newborn infant and immediately alerted neighbours.

“Community members mobilised, retrieved the infant and rushed her to Chipata Level One Hospital,” Chilabi said.

He explained that the baby, believed to be just one day old, was found in a stable condition and was later referred to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital for further medical care.

“The Zambia Police Service commends and thanks the community members for their swift action, which helped save the life of the infant,” Chilabi said.

He appealed to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) to report to the nearest police station.
