The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) says it is seeking to mobilise about US$400 million over the next decade to support African countries demonstrating strong commitment to responsible forestry practices.
Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Dr. Douty Chibamba, said the funding initiative aimed to curb illegal and excessive logging, enhance environmental protection, and strengthen community participation in forest management.
Chibamba made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, where he was received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Alfred Musemuna.
He is in Kenya attending an FSC meeting that has brought together member countries to discuss sustainable forestry initiatives and financing mechanisms.
“Forest certification guarantees responsible forest management by preventing illegal or excessive logging, promoting environmental protection, and encouraging community participation,” Chibamba said.
He noted that sustainably managed forests play a critical role in providing ecosystem services such as food production, climate regulation, and mitigation of floods and droughts—functions that are increasingly vital under changing climate conditions.

Chibamba added that certified forests also attract companies willing to pay for ecosystem services, creating financial incentives for local communities while strengthening conservation efforts.
During the FSC meeting, participating countries presented their forest resources, achievements, and challenges in advancing sustainable forest management.
Zambia used the platform to showcase its progress in forest governance and position itself to benefit from the anticipated funding under the FSC initiative.
“I wish to reaffirm Zambia’s commitment to sustainable forest management and enhanced international cooperation as part of advancing the country’s green economy agenda,” Chibamba said.
