The Ministry of Defence says it has handed over 190 newly built furnished housing units to the Zambia Army at the Kenneth David Kaunda Barracks, commonly known as Mikango Barracks in Chongwe District.

The housing units include 10 High Cost, 62 Medium Cost and 118 Low Cost Houses.

Speaking during the handover, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu said the Ministry was happy that the houses were now ready for occupation by Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers.

Haamaundu said the decision by the Ministry to build the houses was to bridge the gap in the housing deficit for military personnel.

“The objective is to improve the living standard of the men and women in uniform,” Haamaundu said.

“We want to provide modern houses to military personnel in all the Services under the Ministry so that they can be motivated as they work to defend the territorial integrity of the country and preserve its sovereignty,” he added.

Haamaundu also disclosed that over 600 housing units were also nearing completion at the Buffalo Park Barracks in Lusaka’s Chalala area.

“The water and sewerage line being laid at Buffalo Park Barracks will also benefit residents of Chalala, Chilenje and surrounding areas,” Haamaundu said.

Zambia Army Commander Lt Gen Geoffrey Zyeele thanked the government for providing the new housing units to personnel.

“The provision of decent housing for troops is a morale booster,” Zyeele said in a speech read on his behalf by Brig Gen Maybin Muyanga.
