Police in Lusaka say they have traced a Toyota Vitz, registration number BAX 4848, captured in a viral social media video showing an alleged assault involving passengers in a motor vehicle.

Police investigators identified the driver of the vehicle as a 27-year-old taxi driver from Mtendere Compound in Lusaka.

Godfrey Chilabi, the Police Spokesperson confirmed this in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday.

Preliminary investigations show that on June 5, 2026, the driver was hired by two passengers, a man and a woman, both unidentified, near Hybrid Roundabout.

“The passengers requested transport to East Park Mall. While in transit, the male passenger allegedly assaulted the female passenger following a dispute between the two,” Chilabi said.

Police established that the destination was changed during the journey and the driver later dropped both passengers at Munali Mall, where they alighted without paying the taxi fare.

He confirmed that police interviewed both the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle, however, the two passengers remain unidentified and no personal details have been obtained.

Investigations are ongoing with the aim of identifying and locating both individuals seen in the video, according to police.

“The Zambia Police Service reiterates its commitment to treating all cases of Gender-Based Violence with the utmost seriousness,” Chilabi said.

He appealed to the female passenger, as well as members of the public with information, to come forward by reporting to the nearest police station or contacting the toll-free line 9010.
