The United Church of Zambia (UCZ) has joined the nation and the international community in mourning former President Edgar Lungu, describing him as a man of deep conviction, humility, and unwavering faith.
In a statement issued by the UCZ Synod Communication, the Church remembered President Lungu not only for his role as Head of State but as a humble worshipper who often joined UCZ congregations without fanfare.
“As a worshipper in our congregations on numerous occasions, he walked among us not with the grandeur of power, but with the humility of a servant of God,” the statement read.
“We remember him not only for the office he held but for the spirit he embodied — a calm presence in moments of uncertainty, a voice of resolve in times of trial,” the statement added.
The Church expressed heartfelt condolences to former First Lady Esther Lungu, the entire Lungu family, and the nation, assuring them of continued prayers and solidarity during this period of mourning.
UCZ described the late president as a man of both faith and statesmanship, committed to national unity, service, and peace.
The statement read with a verse from the Gospel of Matthew: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4), offering it as a source of comfort and hope.
“We pray that the Lord, who is the God of all comfort, may grant strength to the bereaved family, and peace to the heart of our grieving nation. In this moment of shared sorrow, may we stand as one, and may hope rise as a quiet flame in every home and every heart,” the Church said.
Meanwhile, other major Christian bodies, including the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), and the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), issued a joint message of sympathy.
They described President Lungu’s passing as a moment of profound national reflection.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have poured in from political, religious, and international leaders, many praising his dedication to Zambia’s peace, unity, and public service.
