Police Central Province’s Serenje District has apprehended 110 suspects for riotius behaviour.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed an incident of riotous behavior that occurred on June 09, 2025, at Mukando Turn-Off in Serenje District.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Hamoonga indicated that more arrests were expected as investigations continue.

At approximately 0700 hours, Serenje Police Station received a phone call from a concerned member of the public reporting that a riot had broken out at Mukando Turn-Off.

In response, Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene using two police vehicles—a Toyota hilux registration number ZP1775 B and Toyota Land Cruiser CDF Serenje registration number ZP 2723 B.

Upon arrival, officers found a mob of unruly individuals who became increasingly aggressive.

“Despite efforts by the police to calm the situation, the rioters intensified their actions by pelting stones at the officers and the police vehicles, resulting in damage to the front windscreens of both vehicles,” Hamoonga said.

The violent mob then proceeded to the District Commissioner’s Office where they caused extensive damage by destroying office furniture, computers, inventory records, and windows.

The rioters also targeted the National Assembly Office for the area’s Member of Parliament, vandalizing property in the process.

“Tragically, several police officers sustained minor injuries during the chaos,” he said.

Additional reinforcements were immediately mobilized from Mupepetwe Police Post, the Zambia Correctional Service, Zambia National Service, and Central Division Police Headquarters in Kabwe to contain the situation.

“We are pleased to inform the public that calm has since been restored, and the previously blocked road has been reopened to traffic,” Hamoonga said.

He condemned the acts of lawlessness and reminded members of the public that while grievances may arise, they should be addressed through lawful and peaceful means.

Hamoonga stated that violence only escalates conflict and leads to destruction of property, injury, and potential loss of life.

“We urge the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue,” he said.
