The first-ever Regional Training on Uranium Exploration and Mining, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has kicked off in Lusaka, Zambia.
The week-long programme will bring together geoscientists and technical experts from 19 African countries, marking a significant step in the country’s ambitions to develop a peaceful and sustainable nuclear energy sector.
According to Shamwinda Tembo, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, the training is designed to equip participants with advanced skills in uranium exploration.
These include modern techniques for identifying economically viable uranium deposits, managing geoscientific data, and applying best practices in mining operations.
“This milestone training brings together experts from West, North, East, Central, and Southern Africa to build regional capacity in uranium exploration and mining,” Tembo said in a statement on Sunday.

Participants will take part in technical sessions and field visits to Zambia’s known uranium deposits, gaining hands-on experience in exploration technologies and geological analysis.
The programme alignes with Zambia’s ongoing countrywide high-resolution geophysical survey, a cornerstone project aimed at unlocking mineral potential and attracting sustainable energy investments.
Tembo highlighted that this initiative is a strategic part of Zambia’s broader goal to harness its natural resources in support of the nation’s first nuclear power programme.
“This collaboration with the IAEA underscores Zambia’s commitment to establishing a modern, secure nuclear energy sector and positions the country as a regional leader in nuclear science and technology,” he added.
The training officially opened on Monday at the Government Complex in Lusaka. The ceremony was officiated by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, Hapenga Kabeta, alongside IAEA National Liaison Officer, Larry Mweetwa. The programme will run through June 14, 2025.
