Zambia’s national women’s football team, the Copper Queens, have intensified preparations ahead of two crucial international friendlies as they gear up for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The team is scheduled to face reigning African champions South Africa on May 31, followed by a match against Botswana on June 3.
Both fixtures would be played in South Africa.
Zambia has been drawn in Group A at WAFCON, alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Midfielder Maweta Chilenga expressed optimism about the team’s progress in camp.
“The spirit in camp is very good.These friendlies will sharpen us ahead of WAFCON,” Chilenga said.

She noted that the internal competition for places was pushing players to improve.
“It’s tough, but we’re learning a lot from the senior players,” she added.
Defender Esther Siamfuko also stressed the importance of the upcoming matches.
“These games will give us valuable experience. We’re working hard on our tactical approach,” she said.
She encouraged the newer players to seize their chance to impress.
“They must show they belong here,” Siamfuko said.
Meanwhile, midfielder Natasha Nanyangwe described the training sessions as focused and intense.
“Everyone is giving 100 percent,” she said, adding that the recent success of Zambia’s U-17 girls’ team is serving as inspiration.
“It’s motivating us to also make Zambia proud,” Nanyangwe said
The friendlies are expected to help the Copper Queens build momentum and cohesion ahead of their continental campaign.
